PROPAGANDA IN NAZI GERMANY
LESSON 4
Viewing the poster above, you will learn to understand the use and significance of propaganda in Nazi Germany.
Source analysis: Propaganda Poster
"Adolf Hitlers Jugend geht in die Gemeinshchafts schule" translated to English “Adolf Hitler’s Youth attends community schools”
Using the poster and your own knowledge answer the following questions:
1. How useful or reliable would this source be for a historian studying the role of children in the Nazi state?
2. What does this tell us about education and control of the Nazi Power between 1933-1939?
3. How useful is this poster for a historian studying the indoctrination of the German youth?
Write a brief diary entry describing how effective the propaganda posters (and any other propaganda tools) were in influencing your ideology.
FUN FACT: The Nazi's employed a Minister - Joseph Goebbels - whose main responsibility was Enlightenment and propaganda.
LESSON 5: LETS GET CREATIVE
In groups of three or four design your own propaganda tool promoting Nazism. This can be in the form of one of the following:
- Poster
- Radio broadcast
- Front page of a Newspaper
-Newspaper article
-Flyer
You have 35 minutes to design this, and then it will be presented to the class. Lets see how convincing your group is at recruiting for the Nazi party!
Write a letter to your cousin in France, informing them about the things you have been doing for the Hitler Youth, and tell them a little bit about what has been happening in Germany since 1933.
LESSON 6
SOURCE ANALYSIS: Primary Source, extract of a speech given by Adolf Hitler, focusing on his views of the German youth.
"My program for educating youth is hard. Weakness must be hammered away. In my castles of the Teutonic Order a youth will grow up before which the world will tremble. I want a brutal, domineering, fearless, cruel youth. Youth must be all that. It must bear pain. There must be nothing weak and gentle about it. The free, splendid beast of prey must once again flash from its eyes...That is how I will eradicate thousands of years of human domestication...That is how I will create the New Order." – Adolf Hitler, 1933.
Extract from Nazism: A Documentary Reader (State, Economy and Society 1933-1939) - J. Noakes, G. Pridham, ed. - University of Exeter Press, UK, 1995.
Using the source provided and your own knowledge, what were Hitler’s expectations from the German youth and how successful was he in achieving his goal of creating a 'master race' between 1933-1939? (to be completed in work book)
Write a brief diary entry based on the following question: It is now 1937, what major social changes have you witnessed or experienced yourself in Germany? Make sure to mention the Gestapo, SA and SS agencies and what methods they are employing to keep control.
